Parenting Advice

fundraising-sect.jpg

Family Heart offers a range of support for parents and carers going through crisis; getting things back on track; and setting up for a great future.  Parenting can be hard at the best of times but when things get tough, it can be even harder to be the parent you want to be.

We take an individual approach to the support we offer parents and carers to try to ensure that families get the help they most need at the right time.

Family Heart is in the process of introducing a new way of working with foster carers and parents of children who have experience trauma, abuse and rejection at an early age.  Read about Pillars of Parenting below.

Managing a child with behaviour problems

Cate is a qualified and practicing psychologist who specialises in using a ‘positive psychology’ approach to supporting specific behaviour needs.  She is happy to offer advice to parents in understanding behaviours associated with identified conditions so that they can best support their child at home, at school and out and about in the community.  Cate has a particular interest in supporting parents and educators of children with behaviour problems associated with Autism, Attachment difficulties and any other diagnosed condition.

Triple P - Positive Parenting Programme

Les is accredited to provide level 4 Triple P (Positive Parenting Programmes).  This means he works with individual families, meeting weekly at their home for 10 to 12 weeks.  Together they identify areas for parenting development and learn positive behaviour management strategies that are suited to the specific needs of the parents and children.

Pillars of Parenting Aotearoa

Pillars of Parenting is new to New Zealand.  It is a new way of working with foster carers and parents of children who have experienced early childhood trauma, in particular those who have been removed from the care of their biological parents.  This evidence based approach involves a psychologist ‘consultant’ working just with the carer of the child to help them identify and support the child’s very individual needs.

The idea of Pillars of Parenting is that carers and parents have most knowledge about the particular needs of the children in their care and day to day opportunities to help them recover from trauma.  The approach uses a combination of data evidence and information, professional/clinical expertise and parent skill and knowledge to achieve positive outcomes for vulnerable children.

As Pillars of Parenting is a new way of working, we are happy to be flexible in trialling different ways to deliver the support to carers.  This could be in groups in the way it was initially developed in the UK, or working with individual foster parents in their own homes.
